MLK om upploppen i Frankrike

Med anledning av revolten i de franska betongförorterna återanvänder jag två citat av Martin Luther King som jag publicerade i september i samband med orkanen Katrinas härjningar och New Orleans sammanbrott. Det första handlar om upploppens begränsning:

”The limitation of riots, moral questions aside, is that they cannot win and their participants know it. Hence, rioting is not revolutionary but reactionary because it invites defeat. It involves an emotional catharsis, but it must be followed by a sense of futility.”

Och det andra handlar om vad som bör komma:

"We are now making demands that will cost the nation something. You can't talk about solving the economic problem of the Negro without talking about billions of dollars. You can't talk about ending slums without first saying profit must be taken out of slums. You're really tampering and getting on dangerous ground because you are messing with folk then. You are messing with the captains of industry. . . . Now this means that we are treading in difficult waters, because it really means that we are saying that something is wrong . . . with capitalism . . . . There must be a better distribution of wealth and maybe America must move toward a Democratic Socialism."

Tyvärr är nog det mesta som kan hända efter det här att den konservativa regeringen tvingas avgå samtidigt som Socialistpartiet fortfarande verkar vara i spillror efter folkomröstningen, och att Front National istället går fram med stormsteg på en flodvåg av islamofobi och xenofobi. Inget blir bättre, skenet från de brinnande bilvraken kommer att lysa upp många nätter i betongförorterna i framtiden, om vi inte tar utanförskapet på allvar. Inte bara i Frankrike.
